hi there! i’m a recovering ladder-climber living in new york city and trying to live my best life despite anxiety-fueled cuticle destruction and a tendency to dive into rabbit holes head first. i recently jumped off of the high-paying biglaw conveyor belt to pursue writing and more creative endeavors.
as an immigrant and the first lawyer in my family, i was surprised by so many things throughout life, my education, and legal career. i'm here to demystify the things i do know about (e.g., the ivy league, what being a lawyer is like) and contemplate the things i don't know about (e.g., how to be alive). i’ll also share my journey leaving the safety and stability of biglaw. enjoy!!

the IRS cleaned out my savings
Happy Tax Day! Or if you’re like me and navigating taxes while self-employed for the first time: condolences. I thought that being in a lower tax bracket (cecexie.substack.com/p/financial-fears-of-the-top-5) meant that I would pay a lower percentage of my income in taxes (because that would make sense, right?), but it turns out this is just further evidence that I am terrible with money and finances. In this video accompaniment to my newsletter (cecexie.substack.com/p/the-irs-cleaned-out-my-savings) , I talk about the shock of seeing my tax bill, why high-salaried people can still be terrible at personal finance, and how I think through whether to apply to jobs again or liquidate my inves...

Just stop.
Misleading asf. She must have maxed her retirements to come out to 7k a month. Did not tell us that on purpose.
I personally feel, people tend to put themselves at the top, it is called human ego. So, depending on the prestige of a law school is an easy way to do that. But, remember a top ranking university is way more general than an ivy league school. The comparison cannot be made with Harvard, while making a general statement about university rankings. I don’t think many lawyers or law students are boasting (except to make them more credible to others). What is important is that the law school provides excellent education and students manage themselves properly. Another thing is that the abilities that are tested for admission are very different. A random degree (required for admission) does not measure how one performs while practicing law (while they are helping others). Situations can be very different as well. A full time working parent (including a mother) can’t get as high of a mark during admissions. Even many young students have troubled finances. The more time and resources someone has before admissions becomes important. As far as SC judges are concerned, i believe that it would be roughly proportional to the number of graduates from each school over time. If anyone wants to volunteer to do that math, they are welcome. However, what I feel is more important is where the school is located. A better location serves better opportunities afterwards. 😊
this happened to me in the 2020 quarantine.... I won't stay I'm extremely happy with the changes but I can totally see it there is a big change in my entire life direction... ❤❤
What about my cousin Vinny?
Are we supposed to feel bad for you? You’re doing just fine. More than fine actually.
Young men, and young ladies, check out becoming a lawyer in the United States Marine Corps. Google PLC Law, OCC Law and Marine Corps JAG officer. You may find serving Our Nation, as an officer of Marines, while practicing law, will fulfill you
Why is law school so expensive though ? Really... vs any other certification?
Excellent video. Very informative. Those of you under the age of 27, please consider serving as a JAG in the United States Marine Corps. I worked with many lawyers during my 22 year career as a Marine Corps officer. Marine Corps lawyers are exceptional people, highly regarded by their peers, and seniors, and have a tremendous amount of autonomy. It’s likely that your student loans can be deferred or even forgiven. You will be promoted to the rank of Captain fairly quickly because of your legal education. This means you will make a decent salary. Today, I work as a C-Suite executive for a Marine Corps organization that runs revenue generating businesses for the Marine Corps. I routinely work with the Senior Legal Council. I wonderful lawyer, who retired from the USMC as a JAG officer. He has a nice office, works 40 hours per week, deals with interesting matters, from contracts, to HR issues, to interpreting Department of Defense policy. 😊 P.S. My son is headed to Michigan Law in the fall. He worked for 4 years managing a fulfillment center. His mom, and I, are happy for him. He’s accustomed to hard work, and is disciplined. He also has a calm demeanor and has fun when it’s time to let loose a little
Yeah well look at your student loan.
I just subscribed ❤ as a law student I wanna see u building ur firm , very excited about future videos ❤
You have two channels, Official Channels and Unofficial Channels. Learning to navigate both is CRUCIAL to your success at work. While you ALWAYS need to watch your back, make sure your reputation is as good as it can be. 😉👍✨
180,000 a year!!! Impressive rich girl.
I'm sorry to hear this and 😠angry 😠that your "accountant" advised you to pay the entire balance as a lump sum. The IRS has payment plans at a low interest rate, offers in compromise (settling tax bill for less than full amount), etc. New York state has similar programs. You did not have to put yourself in such a deep hole all at once!
I would just live in the car and save the money.
I have a question 🤔 Is that really your voice ? 😮
yes
@@CeceXie wow , it's so nice to listen to 🫠
Thanks for sharing and honor the transparency. 50% would honestly really shock me too.
1 million money
Extortion
I feel Intelligence just watching you talking
Protip - take the free morning shuttle to ralphs use the bathroom at the coffee shop in the parking lot and get yourself a reasonably priced coffee+breakfast - 100000% shower at night before bed. You are also allowed to bring a bottle of liquor or case of beer back with you from the grocery store + food if you want something fresh that wont keep otherwise
Ughhh! Time entries!!
Shoulda used at least 0.002% of that income on your hair
I know you probably won't see this, but I really appreciate this video! it really made me feel better about my decision to take a gap year. Thanks!
You getting a place to rent in nyc for $2000 a month is a deal!
The first thing about reading Wikipedia and spoilers is so me
I commend you for being honest and vulnerable with a topic as sensational as personal finances. Best of luck rooting for you ❤
So real 🥺
In Canada you would pay significantly less tax, have free healthcare, pay approximately 15k/year for your legal education at a very good law school (before scholarships and bursaries - my legal education was free)…and you would make as much or more money. I honestly had no idea NYC was like this.
Cece!! I move next week and thought searching how to do konmari cleaning would be good and clicked on ur reel without realizing it was u 😭😂 I love finding your vids out in the wild 💗
stoppp that’s so great!!! i love that too 😭😭
Just marry Mr Charlie thats what y'all do . Stop boasting then complaining
Wax u talking like that 🤬
I had to happen to me. I quit school. I was still looking for what makes me happy. So far, what I've found out is that happiness should be the experience. Not the goal.
What is average salary for privacy jobs ?
Lawyer compensation depends on the type of employer, rather than the practice area, so it varies wildly.
I spend $300 in 3 hours in New York every time I get there and that’s like 4 Ubers and lunch . how the hack you survive on $3000 a month …
Thank you for your video, it helped a lot!
The lawyer who said this to me is not actually a lawyer bc he failed in private practice.
Hey, um if you are making 180000/year you are rich lady. Go find a nice home out in the countryside where it's peaceful and quiet. There's nice homes you can get for $3000/month. Be better then living in a cramped cell. That's basically your average nyc apartment.I have to give you respect for being able to live in nyc. I don,t know how you do that. All that traffic, and people, high cost of living, walking outside everyday walking through weed smells. I went to Manhatten for 30 minutes one time and that's all it took to get me high. Just from secondhand, cause that stuff is so potent now days.
Don't feel too bad about this happening setbacks are a part of life. You live and you learn. Just focus on doing your best in the situation you are in. You're have a lot of skills you just don't use them for one reason or another don't let uncertainty paralyze you. Also, congratulations on the wedding!
Senior PhD student at one of the top universities here. On paper my life is also incredible: moved abroad to the country of my dreams, doing research in a cool Uni, having friends and an amazing partner. Underneath there are a lot of fears and wonders if I should give up…
Yale, can’t say tragectory, and shaming people who can’t afford law school. What a peach 🍑
How did I shame people? I took out loans for law school, too.
I don;t believe 180K ......
i'm a first-gen graduate getting ready to apply in the fall. i'm not sure what will happen, but i hope to meet bright people like you both down the line
Good luck!
Didn't she quit long ago still taking about the same old shit
I have a lot of outstanding videos I need to make to address questions that people asked me about law school and the legal industry. Not sure what you consider "long ago," but if you have something else you'd like me to talk about, you can let me know here.
I think it would be a fun experience to go one time for the experience, but it sounds like a hassle after that 😂😂
Was thinking about going to NYC from Miami. I make a third of what she makes but still manage to get 5,000$/month.
why on your spine? You can’t see it.
Great tips!
So interesting! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Cece, I'm a corporate lawyer in India. If I shift to US, will I get a job there in law firms or as an in-house counsel?
Both options are potentially available, although I think firms may be more willing to sponsor work visas for lawyers
